What is a roof top tent?
Rooftop tents are basically tents that you can set up on top of your car. Unlike ground tents, RTT's keeps you off the ground. Even though these tents can be used for everyday camping -- they are mainly built for off-road camping / Overlanding. Roof Top Tents give you the ability to camp almost anywhere and unlike ground tents, RTTs are very easy to setup.
There are 4 different types of Rooftop tents -- Let's quickly look at what they are and which type might fit you the best.
Soft Shell Roof Top Tents
These are the most common type of roof top tents you will see out there. Soft Shell tents are generally cheaper than the other types of roof top tents. They are also very lightweight and comes with a flexible footprint. Soft Shell tents come in many different sizes -- On average, they can accommodate anywhere from 2-4 people.
A couple of cons of Soft Shells are that they are generally very slow to set up. They are also not as durable when compared to other types of RTT.
Popup Roof Top Tents

Hard Shell Roof Top Tents
Hard shell (Also known as clam shell) is the most popular style of roof top tents. They are also my most favorite type. Hard Shell RTTs are the easiest and fastest to setup of the 3 types. You can set these up in under 30 seconds all on your own. They are extremely durable and are built to handle all kinds of rough weather conditions. Also, Hard Shell tents have a very thin footprint.
